It’s been raining in California for the past few days, and all I want to do is curl up on my couch with a good book, a cup of coffee, a warm blanket and read!
Fat chance! I don’t have a lot of extra time to read. However, I try every summer to read a couple of books simply for pleasure. I thought I would share a list of books that I’ve read which have left an impact, or I’ve found enjoyable reading!
Parenting:
So You’re About To Be A Teenager The Rainey Kids
This is a great book to read, and then pass on to your children as early as 10/11 years old. It stirs conversation and opens doors to some not so comfortable or easy to talk about subjects.
Parenting Today’s Adolescents Barbara and Dennis Rainey
The Rainey’s are candid about their successes and failures in parenting their children. I think it was their transparency that made me enjoy this book so much.
How To Pray For My Children By Quin Sherrer
This was the first parenting book on prayer I ever read. It was the foundation of how I pray for my children even today. I have lent this book out so many times that it’s falling apart, and it’s my second purchased copy!
Control Issues:
Who Move My Cheese By Spencer Johnson
Such an easy read and worth every moment of it! If control is a struggle, this is definitely one to help you work through some of those issues.
Heart Issues:
Dealing With the Regjection and Praise of Man By Bob Sorge
I had to take a few of these chapters very slow, and really absorb what the Holy Spirit was doing inside of me.
A Tale Of Three Kings By Gene Edwards
This is a study on brokenness. It was an easy read, but a powerful book! It really had me seeking the heart of God.
Under Cover By John Bevere
Of all the books I’ve read, apart from scripture, this books has had the greatest impact on my life. It deals with authority and the protection which comes when we submit to authority. After reading this book, I have a healthy perspective on authority and my ability to trust God. Oddly enough, although not really a marriage book, it had the greatest impact on my marriage.
It’s Not Business, It’s Personal By Bob Sorge
I have never read a book that made me repent almost all the way through. It caused me to seek the face and heart of God, all the while examining my own in ways I’d never thought to search it before. If you are in ministry of any kind – from helping on Sundays to leading your own ministry this book is a must read!
The Prophetic:
Growing In The Prophetic By Mike Bickle
If you want to understand the prophetic more, how it works through people, where it is biblically for today, and practical application then I recommend this book. After reading this, I felt like I had a more solid foundation.
Thus Saith The Lord By John Bevere
This was another book that had me searching my heart, and praying for greater discernment. I would recommend this to those who have been in the prophetic for awhile. I only say this because I didn’t agree with everything that John said, so it would take someone who understands the prophetic well enough to be able to discern the book. However, there is so much good, it’s one I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater sort of thing.
The Seer By Goll
Another great book which gives a good breakdown of the prophetic gifting to include those who dream prophetically. Excellent read!
Spiritual Warfare:
The Spiritual Warriors Prayer Guide By Sherrer and Garlock
A Woman’s Guide To Spiritual Warfare By Quin Sherrer
Both are absolute must have for understanding spiritual warfare. And a blessings to those who are intercessors. It’s packed full of scriptures, sample prayers, and it’s so simple to read!
Evangelism:
Out of Mormonism By Judy Roberts
I have had a heart for those in the Mormon faith. This book gave me a clearer understanding of their faith and what they go through. I highly recommend the book if you’ve ever wondered about Mormonism.
Fictional But Impacting:
Redeeming Love By Francine Rivers
A beautiful book on God’s unconditional love for us. It’s a thick book which I read in three days. I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend!
And The Shofar Blew By Francine Rivers
Another heart searching, heart checking, don’t forget about those who have gone before us sort of book! Really, you just can’t go wrong with anything Francine Rivers!
Hinds Feet On High Places By Hannah Hunnard
Aside from the book Under Cover, this is probably the second most life-impacting book I’ve ever read. It is one woman’s journey in not only learning to trust God, but seeing herself made new. Another MUST READ!
The Shack By Young
This is a beautiful book on forgiveness. All I can say is just read it!
Could I Have This Dance By Harry Kraus
A women’s journey to trust God. Not a heavy read, but just enjoyable fiction. One of those just for fun sort of books.
The Jesus I Never Knew By Yancey
Be prepared to have your theology about Jesus challenged and moved to a place of hunger! This is a must read!
Mysteries:
If you read my bio, you know I love a good mystery. So here are two I really enjoyed.
Cape Refuge By Blackstone
Mardux Tablet By Higley
NOW YOUR TURN: What are some of your favorite books on or off this list? I am always looking for something good to read! Let’s Chat…
Oooo this is a fabulous post! Love good suggestions for summer reading as that seems to be the best time for me to do that, while I’m lounging in the pool, catching the rays 😉
I LOVE Francine River’s material. Her books captivate your heart and I find myself crying, laughing, and frustrated within 10 minutes! My daughter loves them too! We have read the Atonement Child, Voice in the Wind series (Jerry liked it too), Redeeming Love, and her newest series on Mother/Daughter relationships.
Another great book is The Red Tent by Anita Diamant – its about Dinah in the Bible, who only has a glimpse in the Bible but its a fictional story about her and being a woman during that time.
Hope this blog is archived or made into a resource page as a way to look back when we’re hungry for a book to read. I’ll never remember them all! LOL
I’ve wanted to read the book The Red tent. Thanks for posting and glad you like it. Yes, it will be archived, just search for it when you want it. 🙂
Thank you such much Beth for letting me borrow this book : How To Pray For My Children By Quin Sherrer. This book was what I needed. I am much better at praying for them. I feel more at ease with their lives as I know Jesus has them at the palm of his hands. Our children are God’s gifts to us and that we only have them for a short time her on earth, that we need to take care of them the best as we can and he will do the rest.
Beth is right. I actually returned her book with a couple of pages falling out, I could not bare taping them together just in case she had another solution to save it. LOL
I’m glad you enjoyed the book Debra. Knowledge is power, and it’s so awesome to have God’s knowledge to raise our children!
