Hi Friends,

I sent an email out recently, and the response was so overwhelming. I couldn’t believe how many shared they were feeling the same way – overcommitted and spiritually dry. I spent a couple days thinking about it, and I just knew I had to share with you the conversation I sent to them.

I was on the phone with a friend and in the course of the conversation she shared how her busy schedule has left her exhausted and feeling distant from God.

The conversation got real the moment she admitted how defeated she felt about her relationship with the Lord. Completely frustrated that everything from her job, the house, and family moved its way to the top of the priority list.

I could totally relate. My schedule has been overbooked for months now. I definitely noticed a difference in my attitude and my energy level. I told her because of a perspective shift, I’m now aware when I get out of order. And I have a system in place so I can fix it faster.

The reason I am sharing this with you is because I heard back from her. I was blown away that our casual conversation made such a huge impact on her relationship with God. You know I am all about sharing what works, and I have been talking to a lot of people who are feeling overcommitted and distant from God. So I figured writing an email about what we talked over might benefit you, too. Here’s what we chatted about:

  1. GET TO: I noticed when my time with God is in the “have to” category it goes on the very long list of chores for my attention. And what’s screaming for my attention gets me first. Every mother and employee can relate to this. Yet, when I moved God into the “get to” part of my life, I found I was suddenly looking forward to my alone time with Him.
  2. GET A PLAN: I shared with her that when I sat down and randomly opened up my Bible, I could land on scriptures that made no sense. I noticed at that point my mind was wandering off to the list of 100 “have tos”. I realized when I marked out a section of scripture it created a plan, and that plan kept me hooked.
  3. GET OUT OF MY HEAD: I confessed to her on the phone that I was often so inwardly focused about my own prayer needs, I just passed over prayer because what more could I say that hadn’t already been said. I decided to write out 30 different people to pray for in 30 days. It blew my mind at how my needs were being met even though my focus was on someone else’s.
  4. GET UNDERSTANDING TO MAKE IT STICK: I totally surprised her when I disclosed that sometimes my Bible reading felt like I was just reading a book and not the life-altering words of God. I let her in on a method I use to get the most out of scripture. I noticed the method fine-tuned my ears to God’s voice, and I actually began hearing Him speak to me!
